Q: How often do I need to stain my deck and exterior wood?
A: On cedar wood, a clear sealer should last 1-2 years; a semi-transparent stain should last 2-3 years, while a solid stain should last 4-6 years. Pressure treated wood that contains chromate which is used to bond the chemicals to the wood will definitely help the stain last longer. However, the longevity of a stain or sealer depends on a variety of factors, such as the type of wood, UV exposure, rain, snow and traffic. Using improper products and applications can drastically reduce the longevity of protection to the wood.

Q: What cleaning products work the best?
A: For wood cleaning and stain removal, bleach free and environmentally friendly products are always the best way to go. This prevents damage to plants and vegetation as well as other living organisms, and also can prevent a nightmare of problems in achieving a beautiful finish. It is also wise to be cost efficient and buy products that are available in a concentrate.

Q: What sealers and semi-transparent stains work the best?
A: While acrylic stains and sealers are improving, oil stains and sealers are currently the longest lasting protection. Oil stains and sealers can be penetrating formulas where the wood can look dry but yet be protected. There are also oil stains that through applying multiple coats give a shiny luxurious finish. A penetrating stain will cost a lot less to maintain because the stain removing process down the road will be less work. However, using oil products invites a more precise and detailed application that we wouldn't recommend for a novice. With a variety of products on the market today, it is best to choose what desired look you want before purchasing your stain.

Q: What is a solid stain?
A: A solid stain looks like paint but isn’t! Solid stains are now available with an oil primer for adhesion combined with a latex finish for the flexibility to adapt during weather changes. Also there are solid stains that provide a urethane finish to give more strength to the stain.

Q: What should I look for when considering hiring a contractor to stain my deck?
A: First off, be sure to get their history. References, pictures and testimonials can go a long way. Many decks can look gorgeous through its first year after staining and then look like it’s been through a hurricane the following year. I strongly recommend finding someone who offers a written warranty or else you might be spending $1000 in materials and a weekend with a pressure washer to remove the old stain and start over! What is also important is to understand the future ramifications when it comes time to reapplying the stain. It will need future maintenance and it is a good idea to know what you’re getting yourself into. So know exactly what kind of products that are being used and how to reapply them, IT COULD LITERRALLY SAVE YOU THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS!!!
